This past weekend, the memory of HAFTR alumnus Scott Satran was honored as eight schools-HAFTR, DRS, Waterbury, JEC, YDE, HANC, MDY, and Rambam-came together to bond and play basketball. The tournament was held from Thursday night to Sunday night, with a beautiful shabbaton over Shabbat. Out of town players and coaches stayed at houses that are in walking vicinity of HAFTR Middle School. Thank you to all of the hosts and hostesses. During the shabbaton, players enjoyed uplifting davening, delicious meals, inspiring divrei torah, an oneg at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Melodie and Marty Scharf, and great camaraderie. At the championship game between HAFTR and DRS, Mr. Joey Hoenig, director of Athletics, announced that a new student center and gym at the high school will be dedicated by the Satran family in honor of Scott.
Congratulations to our HAFTR Hawks boys’ basketball team on their performance in Memphis, Tennessee. Although they did not win the championship game, they played very well and earned runner-up status in the Cooper Invitational Tournament. The following boys participated in the games: Jeremy Schneider, Zach Schwartz, Abie Perlow, Brian Nathan, Ezra Appel, Jacob Siri, Jesse Katz, Gilad Kerstein, Jake Berger, Justin Lish, Max Rosner, Sammy Mandel, Jason Mishkin, Jason Abraham, and Gabriel Shore.
Tuesday evening, November 3, was a night to celebrate, as HAFTR High School hosted a double header basketball game against Yeshiva Derech Eretz. The evening, dubbed “fan appreciation night,” celebrated the teams’ many fans.
In addition, the banner for the 2015 Metropolitan Yeshiva High School Athletic League Basketball Championship was dramatically revealed. Two new videos were shown, one to celebrate the recent victory and one to celebrate new beginnings. Both Junior Varsity and Varsity teams defeated YDE, with the Varsity coming from a nine-point deficit as they began the fourth period. HAFTR High School students are looking forward to a successful year from all of the teams and await good news from our Varsity basketball team, who are currently participating in the Memphis Invitational Tournament.
