On January 25, 2017, the Dow Jones crossed the 20,000 mark for the first time ever. The stock market has been rising ever since Donald J. Trump was elected president. This is due to investors believing that Trump will do great things for the economy of the United States. Investors believe that Trump will cut taxes, raise infrastructure spending, and cut back on regulations. The Dow Jones reached this landmark number during Trump’s first week in office because he already began to do the things he promised to do, such as make plans to build the Mexican border wall and continue building two major U.S. oil pipelines. This shows that Trump is already starting to increase infrastructure spending. He claims that big corporations will pay for all of this by using tax credits.
Recently, Donald Trump issued a ban of refugees and immigrants from seven mostly muslim countries until extreme vetting can be done. Many investors claim that this ban is responsible for causing the Dow to drop tremendously and go back under the 20,000 mark. Investors fear that uncertainty and chaos in the geopolitical world has caused people to sell their stocks, which caused the Dow Jones to drop from its peak.
